Context Regularity Indexed by Auditory N1 and P2 Event-Related Potentials

چکیده
It is still a question of debate whether the N1-P2 complex is an index of low-level auditory processes or whether it can capture higher-order information encoded in the immediate context. To address this issue, the current study examined the morphology of the N1-P2 complex as a function of context regularities instantiated at the sublexical level. We presented two types of speech targets in isolation and in contexts comprising sequences of Cantonese words sharing either the entire rime units or just the rime segments (thus lacking lexical tone consistency). Results revealed a pervasive yet unequal attenuation of the N1 and P2 components: The degree of N1 attenuation tended to decrease while that of P2 increased due to enhanced detectability of more regular speech patterns, as well as their enhanced predictability in the immediate context. The distinct behaviors of N1 and P2 event-related potentials could be explained by the influence of perceptual experience and the hierarchical encoding of context regularities.

Auditory event-related responses to diphthongs in different attention conditions.
The modulation of auditory event-related potentials (ERP) by attention generally results in larger amplitudes when stimuli are attended. We measured the P1-N1-P2 acoustic change complex elicited with synthetic overt (second formant, F2Δ=1000Hz) and subtle (F2Δ=100Hz) diphthongs, while subjects (i) attended to the auditory stimuli, (ii) ignored the auditory stimuli and watched a film, and (iii) ...
متن کاملThe Enhancement of the N1 Wave Elicited by Sensory Stimuli Presented at Very Short Inter-Stimulus Intervals Is a General Feature across Sensory Systems
BACKGROUND A paradoxical enhancement of the magnitude of the N1 wave of the auditory event-related potential (ERP) has been described when auditory stimuli are presented at very short (< 400 ms) inter-stimulus intervals (ISI). Here, we examined whether this enhancement is specific for the auditory system, or whether it also affects ERPs elicited by stimuli belonging to other sensory modalities....
متن کاملTemperament: an event-related potential study using the oddball paradigm
The present study examined the structure of interrelations between brain event-related potentials and behavioral measures and temperament dimensions during an attention task. Three temperament questionnaires were used: Eysenck Personality Inventory, Strelau Temperament Inventory, and Rusalov Structure of Temperament Questionnaire. Event-related potentials were recorded using the active auditory...
متن کاملReductions in the N1 and P2 auditory event-related potentials in first-hospitalized and chronic schizophrenia.
The N1 auditory event-related potential (ERP) is reduced in chronic schizophrenia, as is the P2 to attended tones. N1 reduction may be endophenotypic for schizophrenia, being reduced in twins of schizophrenic patients and showing heritability. Results in family members, however, are equivocal, with abnormally small N1 (consistent with an endophenotype) and abnormally large N1 (inconsistent with...
متن کاملCoherent emotional perception from body expressions and the voice.
Perceiving emotion from multiple modalities enhances the perceptual sensitivity of an individual. This allows more accurate judgments of others' emotional states, which is crucial to appropriate social interactions. It is known that body expressions effectively convey emotional messages, although fewer studies have examined how this information is combined with the auditory cues. The present st...
